Completed: 365 phone photos

December 31st, 2007 by David

So I did it. 365 pictures, all taken within their own 24-hour space, all different (well, almost), all taken on a mobile phone (water damage permitting), and all uploaded here.

The whole lot is in the 2007 gallery on my Gallery installation, which I’ve been using since the start of December to feed pictures into posts. I’m slowly updating old posts to use Gallery, so that thumbnails are tidier, and the Lightbox effect is on all pages.

So now I have to decide whether to keep going in 2008. It’s definitely improved my photography, as the cameraphone stipulation restricts me in what I can do, the complete opposite of the way that my SLR gives me total freedom to play with shutter speeds, apertures and focal lengths to get just the image I want. Some themes emerged through the categories. Some expected, some surprising.

I’ll see how I feel in the morning. It’s addictive though, if you want to try doing your own daily photo blog, bear in mind that once you start, and get into it, you’ll feel compelled to stay the course. I often found as midnight loomed, I would be pacing round the house looking for photographic inspiration, getting more and more disturbed at the prospect of not finding an image. Looking back on the year just through these images, sometimes just one for a day, sometimes a dozen or more in 24 hours as a Picasa slideshow brings all kinds of memories flooding back - what I was doing, when, and who with.

If you’d like to do your own, Ham of London Daily Photo, has a good guide to how to get started , and it’s much simpler than the rather tedious and difficult way I’ve chosen to set mine up. You can do it with no knowledge of websites or digital imaging, you don’t even need to spend any money as long as you have internet access and some form of digital camera. I’m just an IT masochist.

A final note, I think I’ll throw open commenting to all on the blog, see where it goes. You can also use the contact form to drop me a line - get in touch!
I think I’ll finish with a selection of 12 pictures, one for each month. I won’t say they’re necessarily technically the best, but I like them.

327 - Normal Service will be resumed shortly

November 23rd, 2007 by David

After 327 days of continuous daily photography, the beoko365 project has hit a snag.

Dismantled K750i

The K750i which was the driving force for me to start this project met a mug of tea on the desk in my office this afternoon, and it hasn’t been right since.

As I type, the phone is in pieces and drying out. It starts, but the keys have gone… funny. Photography is impossible.

Either I’ll reassemble tomorrow, and we’ll be back up and running, or alternatively I will upgrade my phone in seven days’ time, and we’ll re-start with a new phone with a better camera…

A new venture. A new concept for me. Not an original idea, admittedly, but there are a few reasons I want to do this:

  • A new camera/phone
  • A chance to play with WordPress
  • Finding a faster way to get photos online than my current gallery
  • An opportunity to take more photos
  • An opportunity to see if I can create a decent image once a day every day for a year
  • The chance to see if I can make a new year’s resolution and keep it…
